An intro to film budgeting

An intro to film budgeting

- A budget is something used to help finance something
- For the budget you need to know the story for the actors, costumes, make up etc.
- You need to know how much departments need for production.
- Sometimes certain areas in a film set need to lose money to help another area which may need the finances to help develop that area. For example, the finance department would need more money to spend on wages for better actors.
- Pre production is when the film producer is focused on budgeting, because they need to know how much each department needs before they start filming.
- Don't need a big budget to improve the quality of the film, because there are other ways of producing it, such as instead of using expensive tools, you can find a cheaper alternative.
- Focus on each department and the funding they need.

Crowd funding

  4. Who is the director and why is this important? - Vincent Regan. This is important because he has acted in films with similar themes to the Enemy of Man.
  5. How else is the project being funded? - Pre-sales, tax credits and private investors
  6. What was the funding for? - Concept art, storyboard, scout locations, costumes and sets
  7. Why do you think this was successful in gaining funding? - Because it had well known actors starring in it, such as Rupert Grint, so people felt it would be a good film.
  8. What has happened since it was funded? - The film didn't gain enough funding so as a result wasn't able to be made.

Kickstarter - Kickstarter is an online social media platform where you pitch your ideas and wait for people to donate money to your cause, in return for rewards. This can help in pre production because it allows them to know the funding they have for the film. For example, they would know how much money they have for departments such as scenery. The more money they have, they better quality sets they can afford.

  1. Your responses aren't very detailed at all AND you haven't completed the questions associated with 'Enemy Of Man'.

Complete the questions and then for revision, add on a paragraph explaining what Kickstarter actually is and how it can help in pre-production.

If you are struggling or have any questions, please come and speak to me or one of the teachers within the Media department.
